Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition

Every gamer worth his or her salt really needs to know which gaming icon was originally going to be an armadillo, who the severed heads in the Pit in Mortal Kombat resemble, and which game Swedish pop band The Cardigans' song "My Favourite Game" is about.

These golden nuggets of gaming trivia are among many more revealed in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition, due for release on February 8 in the UK and March 11 in the US. The Gamer's Edition is the first of its kind, an offshoot from the Guinness World Records series, an annual compilation of facts and figures, including the fastest time to eat a 12-inch pizza, most sheep shorn in eight hours, and the location of the largest collection of aeroplane sick bags. In keeping with Guinness tradition, the Gamer's Edition of its record book compiles similarly obscure (and often humorous) factoids. A semirandom sampling is listed below:

The Super Mario franchise is the best-selling game series of all time, having sold a total of 145 million units worldwide.

As of November 2007, 466 million Xbox 360 achievements had been unlocked since the service launched, putting the combined global gamerscore at 11 billion.

someone buys a sealed SNES Games for $1200

A CRAZY VIDEO GAME collector has forked out over twelve hundred Benjamins for a sealed copy of Chrono Trigger on the SNES, via auctions site  Ebay.

Quite what possesses someone to buy a video game and then leave it sealed on a shelf for more than a decade we're not sure, but the chap must certainly be glad now. He's also making a quids in, charging $7 for shipping on top of the $1,231 final sale price. Cheap, much?

Chrono Trigger is one of the big boys of the old-school RPG class, being made by Square software, better known for their work on Final Fantasy - to which Chrono was a spinoff. It was considered revolutionary at the time, as Wikipedia

iPhone SNES Emulator Unveiled
I expect I'm not alone in thinking that SNES emulation for the iPhone is rather cool. The way I see it, it seems that as much as sales for iPhone have not met expectations, the few it has shifted have made their way into the hands of the right kind of people. As if emulation for the NES, then the PlayStation wasn't good enough, having the same for the SNES, arguably the epitome of all consoles ever may just be the best third party app for the device yet.

Nintendo World Championships Gold for sale

Video Game collecting is really interesting -- there are numerous rare and uncommon games out in the wild that many people haven't heard of, but some collectors get all crazy about. One of these games that gets the hardcore collectors excited is up for sale right now on Ebay. The starting bid: $15,000.

The game is NintendoWorld Championships Gold. This was a limited-edition game that Nintendo put out for the NES in 1990. It was made around the time of the movie The Wizard, which stared Fred Savage, and promoted the release of Super Mario Bros. 3. Nintendo had a contest where you had 6 some-odd minutes to get a bunch of points in a couple of games, in this big competition, held by Nintendo Power magazine. 90 grey edition Nintendo World Championship games were made; and only 26 of the gold edition Nintendo World Championship versions were given out to winners of the contest, making this Catrtridge one of the most sought after games around.
