History Archive - Sonic the Hedgehog's Series
The Sonic adventures started out in 1991 when Sonic the Hedgehog was released for the Sega Mega Drive/ Genesis. The developers of the series were called the Sonic Team. The main developer of the first game was Yuji Naka, who later became the head of the Sonic Team division. The game planner for this game was, Hirokazu Yasuhara.
STI (Sega Technical Institute) wanted to develop a “true” Sonic game for the Saturn called Sonic X-Treme. Their main competition was Nintendo’s Super Mario 64. Problems developed between STI, the Japanese division of Sega, and the Sonic Team, the project had to be canceled during the last few months of 1996.
The Sonic we know is not only known for video games, but well known for his comic and TV show. Sonic has made his prescence known worldwide. So much so, he has even been in many parades around the world - such as the Sonic float.
All the different games in the series all feature the famous teenge Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic fights his way to save the world from the evil genius Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, who has an agenda to create the so-called Eggman Empire. Now, for him to achive his goal to create Eggman Empire, he must take out Sonic and his friends. In the Sonic Series games, which is mainly a platform game, with a side-view prospective. The controls of the game are faily simple. The speed of the characters is one of the top selling points of the game. The characters of the game have abilities to run up hills, the walls, and even the ceiling. The common traits in the Sonic games are very known for their roller coaster like hoops and corkscrews. Sonic games have also been known to have stages like a pinball machine, which turns Sonic into a pinball to shoot around the screen, just like playing a actual pinball game.
In the Sonic games, there are rings you must collect, similar to that of the Mario game where coins are collected, after you collect a 100 rings, Sonic receives an extra life. These rings can protect you from many of the dangerous things in the game. The only things they don’t protect Sonic from are things such as running out of time in the game, drowning in water, or falling completely off a ledge. In some stages of the game, you collect 50 coins and it can advance you to secret stages in the game as well. Another neat thing about rings is that you can collect 50 of them to obtain Super Sonic Status. Super Sonic can have the ability of flight in certain circumstances and also the ability to fly for longer periods of time in space. In order to achive the best possible ending to the game, Sonic must collect all of the Choas Emeralds. Sonic does not necessitate by collecting the Emeralds himself, Sonic must stop Eggman (Dr. Robotnik) from getting the Emeralds himself, and keep Eggman from ruining the world with his powers.
The main characters throughout the series of the games are:
The main character of the game is of course, Sonic The Hedgehog. There are also many other characters from the many different series of Sonic games. Many of the heros in the game besides Sonic are, Miles “Tails” Powers, Knuckles The Echidna, Amy Rose, Cream The Rabbit, Silver the Hedgehog, Big the Cat, Choatix, Might the Armadillo, Blaze the Cat, and Tikal the Echidna.
Of course, you also have the Villans of the Sonic series, as well. You have Eggman (AKA: Dr. Robotnik), Metal Sonic, Fang the Sniper, Biolizard, Black Doom, and Mephiles
There are many other various characters who appear throughout the game. Every series of Sonic introduces a new character. Some good and some not so good. There are some characters that have a small appearance such as Vanilla the Rabbit. Vanilla is Cream, the Rabbits mother, and was introduced in Sonic Adavance 2. In the game, she was only mentioned as Ma’am/Mother. They never used her acual name Vanilla. These are just a few of the characters you will meet as there are many different characters introduced in the various games throughout the series.
The Sonic Series
Sonic the Hedgehog (SH1)
Sonic the Hedgehog was released in 1991 for the Sega Mega Drive aka Genesis. Sonic the Hedgehog exceeded expected sales and did exactly what Sega had hoped. The first Sonic made the Genesis a real player in the console market. Everyone loved Sonic from the first moment he appeared on their screen wiggling his finger at them.
After awhile people started to realize that there wasn’t much of a challange to the game at all. There were not as many challenges or secret areas in the game to find. The game became somewhat boring after you meet all the challenges. However, people still loved the game and Sonic, thus began the sequels, conversions, and spin-offs. Sega finally found the mascot they were looking for with Sonic!
Your Quest:
The once quiet peaceful world of Mobius is frightened into chaos when Dr. Kintobor, a kindly scientist who has been researching the great Chaos Emeralds, is transformed into an angry megalomaniac after a laboratory accident. All of the sweet, adorable and fluffy animals on the planet have been transformed into robotic denizens (Badniks) of evil - with the exception of Sonic the Hedgehog, a friend of Kintobor's who was too swift to be trapped. Sonic must collect all the Chaos Emeralds, free his friends, and conquer Kintobor before it is too late.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (SH2)
Released in 1992, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a step-up from the first Sonic. Sonic 2 is a little more challanging for players. You can now enter special zones from the middle of a level instead of waiting until the end of a level to access these special areas. These zones take shape in 3-D tunnels. The visuals of the game are more deeper and the color is more richer than the first game. Sonic 2 also introduces a second character whom we have all heard of and that characer is Miles Powers, better known as “Tails”! In addition, all 7 Chaos Emeralds can be collected which will turn Sonic into Super Sonic.
Your Quest:
A sequal to a game wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t have the villian? Dr. Ivor Robotnik has returned and he has started his old tricks up again. To make the nasty-sounding Death Egg, all the rabbits, birds, and various other animals in Mobius have been enslaved.
Yes again, it is up to Sonic to save the day. He must now save his friends and the world from Dr. Robotnik. This time he has a friend to help. Sonic 2 introduces Tails, Sonics little buddy who follows his hero around and will even help him out when the time comes!
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (SH3)
Sonic3 was released in 1993 and it is not just another Sonic game. Sonic 3 is a lot less one-dimensional this time around. In Sonic 3, it is more of a puzzle based game play, with switches and secret areas all over the place for Sonic and Tails to find. You can use Tails just like in Sonic 2 and complete the quest separately, with a different ending each time as a reward. Bonus stages are now high-speed mazes that are on checkered spheres, which is more challenging than it may sound.
Your Quest:
After defeating the Death Egg in Sonic 2, Sonic and Tails took a nice little vacation that they very much needed and deserved. While Sonic and Tails are away, Dr. Robotnik is at it again. The remains of the Death Egg that Robotnik controls goes crashing onto an island, called the Floating Island. This island in the sky is held up in the air by the powers of the Chaos Emeralds. For your information, this is the same kind of energy that could turn the Death Egg into an indestructible weapon.
Robotnik fools a life long resident on the island, Knuckles the Echidna, into thinking that sweet Sonic and Tails, are in fact thieves. Since Knuckles has been tricked, he is spending all of his time setting traps and tricks for Sonic 3 and Tails to overcome.
Sonic and Knuckles (SK)
Sonic and Knuckles are pretty much doing the exact same things they did in Sonic 3 however with a twist or two. The main difference is you get to control knuckles in this series. Knuckles have an assortment of different moves that Sonic does not have. Sonic and Knuckles have all new special stage challenges that let you control Tails. By collecting all the Super Chaos Emeralds, Sonic and Knuckles will turn into Hyper Sonic and Hyper Knuckles. Tails will transform into Super Tails, as well.
Your Quest:
Robotniks Death Egg is wrecked again and it now lies on top of an active volcano on Floating Island. The Dr. sets out to retrieve the Emeralds to make his escape. Ending up in the mountain hills, Sonic and Tails are also searching for the Chaos Emeralds. Meanwhile, Knuckles is sick and tired of all these people running around his island and he will do whatever it takes to make Floating Island a quiet place again. Adventures abound on every turn with so many perils on the island.
Sega Sonic (1993) (SS)
Sega Sonic came to be in 1993 on the Arcade. This game has been mentioned to be just like the game Moonwalker. All the characters in this game are operated by a trackball. By rolling the ball in one direction, you make your character move at that mandatory speed. Mainly it is just about running around collecting rings and giving Robotnik a hard time throughout the game.
Your Quest:
Robotnik has decided to use all his checks from pervious games and build himself his very own island called Eggman Island. This island is covered in nothing but the most evil things. Sonic is joined in this version by his two friends, Ray (a squirrel) and Might the Armadillo. It is up to this trio to defeat Robotnik and Badniks and to save the world yet again.
Sonic CD (1993) (SCD)
In this Sonic CD, you have the capability to change the background graphics. In these stages of the game, you have unusual checkpoints, when you run fast enough past them you are taken into an unusual era. When you destroy a Badnik factory in the past, the future is changed into a brighter happier place. Everything is else is mainly the same in this game. Collecting rings, busting the Badniks, and keeping Dr. Robotnik from taking over the world are adventures, like in previous games.
Your Quest:
Sonic is so quick, that he can warp back and forth through time. Sonic goes about defeating the Robotnik's most recent world domination-themed plan. Robotnik has came upon a small moon where time is, without doubt, twisted. It is up to Sonic to destroy the Badnik factories in the past to ensure Robotnik doesn’t win the victory in the future. Once the factories are destroyed in the past, the future is once again a happier place in which to live.
Sonic Chaos (1993) (SC)
Robotnik has once again imprisoned all of Sonic’s cute and furry friends. In Sonic Chaos, you can either have control of Sonic or Tails. Sonic and Tails have their own objectives and their own set levels in this game. Sonic has his ability for speed, while Tails has the ability to fly like a helicopter with his tail. Enjoying one game as Sonic and then another as Tails gives the player more options and more hours of play with different outcomes.
Your Quest:
South Island (same set-up in the first Sonic) is slowly sinking because of all of the evil things Robotnik has been doing. That’s where Sonic and Tails come in! In Sonic Chaos, it’s up to you to control Sonic and Tails to collect rings, recover the Chaos Emeralds, and save the world. It does not matter what character you play you can save the world from the evil Dr. Robotnik, the choice is yours!
Sonic Spinball (1993) (SS)
Sonics Spinball is basically just like playing an actual pinball game. Instead of using a silver pinball, you’re using Sonic instead. Sonic transforms into a pinball and is hit around the board to discover more hidden and rewarding areas. The main thing for Sonic to do is collect the Chaos Emeralds.
Your Quest:
Dr. Robotnik has been trying his hardest to get on the cover of Time magazine as the worlds most evil man in the world. Robotnik decided to build his most monstrous machine yet. Robotniks machine was so big; he needed a whole island to build it. Now Sonic has heard about the monstrous machine and has decided to take down Robotnik once again. Now it’s up to you to help Sonic on his mission only in pinball style.
Sonic Drift (1993) (SD)
Sonic Drift it is similar to a racing game just like Mario Cart. Mainly all there is to this game is racing around a track collecting rings and gaining power-ups. This game only made its appearance in Sega’s homeland. The tracks in this game are flawlessly flat and they do not give off the most impression of speed.
Your Quest:
There is not much of a quest to this game. Mainly all you have to do is race around the track collecting rings. Watch out for Robotnik dropping bombs to make you crash. Your power-ups come in handy when Robotnik drops those bombs. The winner of each level is awarded with Chaos Emeralds.
Sonic Triple Trouble (1993) (STT)
Sonic Triple Trouble is known as Sonic and Knuckles 2 in Japan. Robotnik has finally collected all the Chaos Emeralds. However, that is not the end of the story, one of his workers hits a wrong button, by mistake, and this sends all the Chaos Emeralds flying all over the place. The emeralds have been thrown over all five parts of Mobius.
The normal rules still apply for this game as well: collecting rings, collecting Chaos Emeralds in the bonus stages, and keeping Robotnik from ruling the world once again.
Your Quest:
Sonic and Tails hear about the mishap with the Chaos Emeralds and head on out to collect the emeralds themselves to once again save the world from the evil Robotnik.
While their out in quest of collecting the Emeralds, Knuckles is still having a hard time trusting Sonic and Tails. He decides to collect the Chaos emeralds on his own. In the game, you will meet a new character by the name of Nack the Weasel, who is a bounty hunter, that is out trying to find and collect the Emerald He has a totally differently reason for collecting the emeralds, he is hoping for a huge check at the end of the Emerald rainbow!
Sonic Drift 2 (1995) (SD2)
There is not much to say about Sonic Drift 2. It is basically the same as the first Sonic Drift. Sonic Drift 2 offers a grand prix mode and gives you the opportunity for a 2-player game. There is not a lot of speed in the game, but there are stages that are quite interesting such as the Beach and the Casino Zone.
Your Quest:
Your quest in this game is mainly just as the first Sonic Drift. Collect rings and get power-ups while racing along the track. Watching out for obstacles of course as with the first Sonic Drift can be a bit of a challenge. The winner receives Chaos Emeralds.
Sonic Labyrinth (1995) (SL)
Just picture Marble Madness with some more bumpers and traps with a mention of puzzle action. Each part of the game has a time limit therefore; Sonic must find his way to the exit. If Sonic fails, the outcome could be the destruction of the world. You will soon realize that you need common sense of direction in order to get all the way through the various mazes in the game.
Your Quest:
Dr Robotnik has replaced Sonic’s speedy shoes with slow sneakers lined with lead. Dr. Robotnik must not have been thinking much since he told Sonic the way to get his shoes back. You must help Sonic as he slowly rolls along through the Labyrinth stages in order to get his speedy shoes back and of course defeat the Robotnik.
Sonic the Fighters (1996) (SF)
In Sonic the Fighters, it the first time player had the chance to experience one-on-one fighting action. Three buttons controlled the Characters kicking, punching and dashing options. The game also presented a small quantity of out of the ordinary moves. These extra or special moves were created by using the three buttons in various combinations. Each fighter was equipped with a shield, which continued to wear down during the battle making the fighter more vulnerable to attacks
Your Quest:
In Sonic the Fighter, you are introduced to many characters you have never heard of before that came from Sonic’s universe. After the regular characters are defeated, Metal Sonic and Super Sonic will lay down their own challenge. Once you have defeated them, you must face the famous Robotnik. In order to win the game you must defeat Robotnik. Learning the special attacks will be a great aid in the last few battles.
Sonic 3D Blast (1996) (S3DB)
Remember all those birds you have seen in other Sonic games? Well, they are called Flickie’s. These Flickies always lived on their own little island called Flickie Island until Sonic 3D Blast! Robotnik came up with a great idea. He went over to Flickie Island and turned every Flickie into his own personal robot slaves. Sonic must dig deep to save the Flickie’s from the evil hands of Robotnik.
Your Quest:
Your mission in this game is to aid Sonic in saving the Flickie’s and beating Dr. Robotnik at the end of each stage. Of course, you still need to collect rings, rescue the animals, and beat Robotnik at the end of each stage.
By collecting 50 rings and giving them to Tails or Knuckles, you will open up wormholes that lead to bonus stages in the game. When you complete the bonus stage, you are rewarded with Chaos Emeralds. There is a little extra fun in this game and that is collecting the Flickie’s! If Sonic runs into a Flickie before they are transformed, they will start to tag along with you. The more Flickie’s you collect the more bonus points you receive.
Sonic Jam (1997) (SJ)
Sonic Jam is amazing it is like all the Sega Genesis Sonic games all rolled into one and placed on one disc.
With Sonic Jam, you can enjoy Sonic World. Sonic World has Sonic running around in the 3-D Green Hill Zone that opens up miniature bonuses that you can use in the standard games. You will also be able to explore areas that include museums and building that highlights older artwork and media.

The quest in this game is mainly the same as any Sonic game. With all the Sonic games rolled into one, you can image what you must do to aid Sonic, save animals, beat Robotnik, and save the world.
Sonic R (1997) (SR)
In Sonic R, Sonic is not the only one gaining speed in this game. Sonic is joined by all his friends for a series of races in Sonic R. Sonic R offers the tracks in full 3-D. The tracks themselves are based on several of the classic Sonic games. There are many secrets to discover and unlock in Sonic R. Sonic R is a cross between Sonic World segments and Sonic Jam, along with the racing episodes of Sonic Adventure.
Your Quest:
Each Character in the game has its own methods of transport. For example, Amy has her own car while Dr. Robotnik has his egg ship. The main goal in this game is just like any racing game - racing! In addition, you collect rings along the way and beat Robotnik.
Sonic Adventure (1999) (SA)
In Sonic Adventure, you can take on the roll of a few different characters such as, Sonic, Tails, Big, E-102, Amy, and Knuckles. The game offers very well themed stages that range all the way from the regular platform stages all the way to snowboarding. Mini-games in great quantities come out with regularity, but the classic instant-action game play is back for the first time in years.
Your Quest:
Dr. Robotnik has taken a new creature under his wing know as Chaos. Chaos is using the Chaos Emeralds to grow more and more powerful. To stop this monster Sonic needs help from some friends which makes the adventure more challenging and entertaining. Choosing the various characters enables players to enjoy more hours of adventure than before.
Sonic Pocket Adventure (1997) (SPA)
Sonic Pocket Adventure is a mix of Genesis Sonic 2 with some elements of Sonic 3 added to the mix.
Tails, 3-D bonus stages, and untouchable speed are reborn and stronger than ever.
Your Quest:
Kintobor is back to try once again to take over the world. Kintobor has a plan to rid the world of the Chaos Emeralds. However, Sonic and Tails have a different plan, which is collecting the Emeralds and saving the world.
Conclusion
As you have seen, all the Sonic games have about the same objective and that is mainly defeating Dr. Robotnik. Some games listed never made it very popular due to the fact they were not very challenging. Different Sonic games came out on different systems such as Sega Genesis, Arcade, Sega Master System, Sega CD, Game Gear, Sega Saturn, and the NeoGeo Pocket Color. We all know we love Sonic and his friends. Will there ever be anymore Sonic games? Well were just going to have to sit back and wait to find out.
