History Archive - The Legend Of Zelda
The Legend Of Zelda series has been one of the most popular consoles games of recent times, with many different additions released since the original “The Legend Of Zelda” in 1987. The game is produced by awarding winning games designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

Miyamoto based the game on his experiences in the surrounding hills of his Kyoto home town with its forests, lakes and caves which gave him great adventures as a boy. His abiding memory was of the discovery of a large cave, which he entered and explored on many occasions - this has become a major element of the Zelda series.

While the game itself is named after Princess Zelda, it revolves around a boy named Link and his adventures in pursuit of the rescue of Princess Zelda. In fact Princess Zelda does not appear in a couple of the games, although there are a number of flashback, and verbal mentions of her. The series of games revolve around the land of Hyrule and Links constant battles with arch enemy Ganon (also appearing as Ganondorf and other characters in later games).

The land of Hyrule offers a vast array of differing landscapes and climates and is also home to a number of tribes and monsters which Link has to overcome in his pursuit of the “Triforce”, which is a set of three golden triangles required to give Link the power to succeed. The games themselves are a mixture of puzzles, strategy play, action and exploration offering gamers a great variety of tasks and adventures.

Looking back to the original “The Legend Of Zelda” the game looks so simple compared to today’s offerings but the development of the series has kept its fan base with an incredible 13 games released. The games released include :-

Zelda II : The Adventure Of Link (AOL)

This next installment was released in July 1988 and while lOOSely based on the concept of the first game, was considered by many to be a little too far removed from the style of the original.

It seems that the producers took note of this with future games returning to the more familiar concept of the first game.

Majora’s Mask (MM)

This is probably one of the darker versions of the series, dealing with death and destruction and giving a rather depressing feel to the game. Originally called Zelda Gaiden, it received mixed reviews, even though it retained the same characteristics of the earlier Ocarina of Time.

Oracle of Ages / Oracle of Seasons (OOA / OOS)

These two games were released at the same time, as the games were inter-joining with the second being an extension of the first. This was a fairly unique departure from the norm at the time, and received mixed reviews prior to release. Originally planned as a tri-logy this was abandoned in favor of two games in order to ensure that the quality was retained. Many fans were initially unhappy at what they saw as a move to Pokemon orientated game play, but these worries soon disappeared.
