Interesting news in the Wii homebrew/hacking scene. It appears as if the Virtual Console games from the Wii Shop Channel have been decrypted and revealed as simple ROMs with HTML help files. Each game also comes with its own emulator included in the game WAD file. There is some concern within the scene that this might result in tighter security by Nintendo in terms of newer security patches and updates. It could result in a higher level of difficulty for those interested in customizing their Wii, however Nintendo has yet to release an official statement, so there is no telling what direction they could go with this. There is the likelihood that within days, most VC games will have their own releases available on share sites, including Super Nintendo ROMs like Metroid and Mario Kart. In fact extraction programs almost certainly already exist allowing you to decrypt and load them for yourself. It is speculated that any decrypted game you download onto your Wii, even if the installation fails, will then be able to be downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel, because it will then show up as already having been downloaded. There is no telling what future this could hold for the Wii homebrew/hacking scene. Anyone have an opinion? Feel free to comment! |
