Good Potential but Fell Short
When playing games on any system you’ll notice that some games have so much potential to be great but fell short of the mark. American Gladiators is one of them. This game includes 5 events (Joust, Powerball, Human Cannonball, Assault and the dreaded Wall) and if you’re really good, and I mean really good you can advance to the Eliminator.
Joust is pretty simplistic but it is different from the event on television to give it more of a lasting appeal. Instead of having just one round with the gladiator, you will have 4 or more continuous rounds depending on the level of difficulty. Playing on Level 1 or 2 the difficulty is bearable, but advancing on to Level 3 or 4 and you better hope you can mash buttons like there’s no tomorrow.
Powerball is one of my favourite events. Plays out exactly like on TV while using a button to pick up the balls from the bin and using another button to place the ball in the scoring cylinder.
Human Cannonball is not a bad event, but I really was not a fan of it on TV so I didn’t enjoy it as much in this game. This event comes with a format similar to that of Joust with having multiple rounds one after the other to defeat the gladiator. I found that you have to be spot on to actually hit the gladiator off which is quite a downside.
