Super Star Wars Description / Player Feedback
Super Return of the Jedi is an action-platformer that continues the quality of fun set by the last two games. It follows the movie's storyline pretty well, with nicely detailed renderings of familiar locations, five playable characters, and John Williams' memorable score. As a movie-to-game translation, it's definitely one of the strongest of the 16-bit era.
Special mention must be made of the Mode-7 pseudo-3D stages. With the limited technology available to programmers at the time, they were quite inventive in pulling off the Speeder Bike chase, Millennium Falcon battles, and the final run into the Death Star.
There's a nice handful of these levels scattered throughout the game, which mixes things up a bit between the regular 2D stages.
An Absolute Classic!
Super Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi follows closely the standard set by the first two Super Super Star Wars games, with multiple playable characters and Mode 7 quasi-3D vehicle sequences.
Controls are identical to the second game, and this installment also includes its predecessor's password save option. It loosely follows the plot of Return of the Jedi, although some of the levels aren't seen in the film at all, such as Luke Skywalker having to fight through the Death Star to get to Emperor Palpatine.
In addition to the standard Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, new playable characters include Leia and Wicket the Ewok. Bosses include the Jabba the Hutt's Palace door droid, the Rancor beast, and Emperor Palpatine. Vehicle sequences include the Endor speeder bike chase, and a cruise in the Millennium Falcon
What a game
The third installment in the Super Star Wars trilogy makes its way to the Super Nintendo in the form of SUPER STAR WARS: Return of the Jedi. Loosely following the plot of the movie, it's up to you to guide familiar characters through 19 levels of intergalactic action as you try to lead the Rebel Alliance to victory over the Imperial Forces. Each level will call for you to take on a different role Luke, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, and Wicket the Ewok and use each character's special talents to complete your mission and get out alive. You'll visit several locales borrowed straight from the movie including Jabba the Hut's palace, the forests of Endor, and the Emperor's Tower as you battle Darth Vader and his Imperial Army.
